What to know before you compare
Auto loan refinancing makes sense when your credit has improved since the original loan, when market rates have dropped, or when you need to lower the monthly payment to free cash flow. The math works above roughly 100-bps APR improvement on most balances; below that, the application overhead eats the savings.
Lenders below split between specialists (RateGenius, AutoPay, Caribou, MyAutoLoan) routing across multi-lender networks and direct lenders (LightStream) underwriting in-house.
Frequently asked questions
How does auto loan refinancing work?+
Refinancing replaces your existing auto loan with a new one — ideally at a lower rate, a different term, or both. The new lender pays off your current loan, and you begin making payments to them under the new terms. The vehicle title transfers to the new lienholder. Most borrowers refinance to lower their interest rate or monthly payment, or to remove or add a co-borrower.
When is it worth refinancing your car loan?+
Refinancing typically makes sense when your credit has improved, when market rates have fallen, or when you need a lower monthly payment. A common rule of thumb is that an improvement of roughly one percentage point or more on the remaining balance is worth pursuing; smaller gains can be eaten by fees and the time cost. It is generally less worthwhile late in a loan, when most interest has already been paid.
Does refinancing an auto loan hurt your credit?+
Refinancing usually causes a small, temporary dip. The lender runs a hard inquiry, and opening a new loan lowers the average age of your accounts. Many borrowers see scores recover within a few months of on-time payments. Shopping multiple lenders within a short window — often 14 to 45 days depending on the scoring model — is typically counted as a single inquiry to limit the impact.
Can you refinance a car loan if you owe more than it's worth?+
Being underwater — owing more than the vehicle's value — makes refinancing harder because lenders evaluate the loan-to-value ratio. Some lenders will still refinance negative-equity loans, often at higher rates or requiring you to pay down the gap. Options narrow as the equity gap widens. Bringing cash to reduce the balance or waiting until you build equity can expand the lenders willing to work with you.
What documents do you need to refinance an auto loan?+
Lenders generally request proof of identity, proof of income (recent pay stubs or tax returns), proof of residence and insurance, and details on the current loan such as the payoff amount and account number. They also need the vehicle's information — VIN, mileage, year, make, and model. Having these ready before applying speeds the process, since the new lender must verify the payoff with your existing lienholder.
Are there fees to refinance a car loan?+
Costs are usually modest but not always zero. Depending on your state and lender, you may pay a lien-transfer or title fee, a state re-registration fee, and occasionally a small loan-origination fee. Some lenders advertise no application fees. Watch for prepayment penalties on your existing loan, which are uncommon on auto loans but possible. Factor any fees into the break-even math before refinancing.
