Insurance Cost Estimator
Before you shop for insurance, it helps to know the typical cost range. Select your insurance type and adjust the inputs — the estimator returns a national average range based on NAIC and KFF data so you can budget realistically.
Educational estimate based on the inputs you entered — not financial, legal, or tax advice. Verify against your specific situation before acting on this output.
How it works
Methodology
Inputs
- Insurance type
- Auto, homeowners, renters, term life, or individual health.
- Home value tier
- Auto/home & renters only — adjusts the national-average range by a home-value multiplier (0.7× under $200K up to 2.2× over $1M).
- Age
- Term life & health only — adjusts the range by an age-band multiplier reflecting higher mortality/claims risk at older ages.
- Coverage amount
- Term life only — scales the range proportionally against the $500,000 base policy used for the national-average figures.
Formula
Estimate = base national-average range (low/mid/high) × applicable multiplier(s) — home-value tier for home/renters, age band for term-life/health, coverage ÷ $500,000 for term-life.
Assumptions
- All base ranges are national averages — actual premiums vary by state, credit score, claims history, and carrier underwriting, sometimes substantially.
- This is a budgeting tool only, not a quote — no underwriting or carrier-specific pricing is used.
- Term-life and health age multipliers are directional bands, not actuarial rate tables.
Worked examples
Full-coverage auto insurance, national average
- Insurance type
- Auto
- Coverage
- Full coverage
Estimated $1,760/yr (typical range $900 – $3,200/yr). Liability-only averages roughly $650–$1,100/yr instead — actual rate depends heavily on state, driving record, and credit score.
Homeowners insurance, mid-range home value
- Insurance type
- Homeowners
- Home value
- $350K – $600K
Estimated $1,428/yr (typical range $900 – $3,500/yr) — the unadjusted NAIC national average, since the $350K–$600K tier carries a 1.0× multiplier. Higher-value homes scale up to 2.2× this baseline.
Frequently asked
Questions readers ask
Where does the insurance cost data come from? +
Auto and homeowners averages are from the NAIC (National Association of Insurance Commissioners) annual insurance reports. Health insurance benchmark premiums are from the KFF Health Insurance Marketplace Calculator (2024 data). Term life estimates use published carrier rate tables and LIMRA industry data.
Why is my actual quote different from the estimate? +
National averages mask wide variation by state, credit score, claims history, home construction type, driving record, and health status. This tool is for budgeting only — get quotes from at least three carriers to find your actual rate.
Does the health insurance estimate include ACA subsidies? +
No. The estimate shows the benchmark premium before any Premium Tax Credit. If your income is between 100% and 400% of the federal poverty level, you may qualify for substantial subsidies. Use the KFF subsidy calculator at kff.org to see your net cost.
What is included in a homeowners insurance policy? +
A standard HO-3 homeowners policy covers the dwelling, other structures, personal property, loss of use, liability, and medical payments to others. Flood and earthquake coverage are separate policies. The NAIC's consumer guide explains all coverage components in plain language.
How often is the underlying cost data refreshed? +
NAIC and KFF publish their underlying reports annually, and this estimator is updated to reflect each new release when it comes out. Check the page's last-updated date against the current calendar year — if it's showing prior-year data, treat the range as directionally useful for budgeting but get a live quote before finalizing a purchase decision.
