Business Mileage Deduction Calculator (2026)

If you drive your personal vehicle for business, you can deduct the business-use portion using the IRS standard mileage rate. This calculator uses the current 2026 rate ($0.76/mi, effective July 1, 2026 — up from $0.725/mi Jan-Jun 2026 after a mid-year IRS adjustment) and shows both the deduction amount and the actual tax savings at your marginal rate. If your miles span both halves of the year, split them by date. Requires a contemporaneous mileage log to defend in an audit.

Educational estimate using current-year projections — not tax advice. Verify with a CPA against your full return before filing or acting on this output.

How it works

Methodology

Inputs

Business miles driven
Total miles driven for qualifying business purposes during the tax year. Requires a contemporaneous log.
Marginal federal tax rate
Your marginal federal income tax bracket (10% / 12% / 22% / 24% / 32% / 35% / 37% for 2026).
Self-employment tax applicability
Whether the business income is subject to SE tax (Schedule C / single-member LLC = yes; S-corp wages = no on the wage portion).

Formula

Deduction = Business miles × current 2026 IRS standard mileage rate ($0.76/mi, effective July 1, 2026) Tax savings (federal income only) = Deduction × Marginal federal rate Tax savings (including SE tax) = Deduction × (Marginal federal rate + 15.3%) — for SE-taxable income

Assumptions

  • Uses the current 2026 standard mileage rate of $0.76/mi, effective July 1, 2026 (up from $0.725/mi Jan-Jun 2026 — the IRS made a rare mid-year adjustment for gas-price increases, the first since 2022). If your miles span both halves of the year, split them by date rather than applying one rate to the full year.
  • Estimator only — actual savings depend on your full return (other deductions, credits, state tax, AMT).
  • Not an offer, not approval, consult a CPA before filing.

Frequently asked

Questions readers ask

What miles can I deduct as business mileage? +

Miles between business locations, miles to meet clients, miles for business errands. Commuting from home to your regular workplace is NOT deductible. Driving from your home office to a client meeting IS (if home is your primary place of business).

Standard mileage rate vs actual expenses — which is better? +

Standard mileage is simpler — no receipt tracking. Actual-expense method tracks gas, maintenance, insurance, depreciation, etc., then applies a business-use % to the total. Actual can be larger if you have a thirsty vehicle or expensive depreciation; standard is typically the safer + simpler choice. Generally you must choose method in year 1 of business use.

Do I need a mileage log? +

Yes. The IRS requires a contemporaneous (kept-as-you-go) log of each business trip: date, destination, business purpose, miles. Apps like MileIQ, Everlance, and Stride auto-track via phone GPS. A paper log works too. Without it, the IRS can disallow the deduction in an audit.

Can I switch between the standard mileage rate and actual expenses each year? +

Generally no, not freely on the same owned vehicle. If you use the standard mileage rate in the first year the vehicle is placed in business service, you can typically switch to actual expenses in a later year. But once you switch to actual expenses (and claim depreciation), you generally can't switch back to the standard rate for that vehicle. Leased vehicles must use whichever method you choose for the entire lease term. See IRS Publication 463 and confirm with a CPA before changing methods.

Does mileage to a coworking space or client site count as business mileage? +

It depends on where your regular workplace is. Ordinary commuting from home to your regular fixed workplace is never deductible. But if your home is your principal place of business, trips from home to a coworking space, a client meeting, or any other business-related site are deductible business mileage — it's travel between business locations, not a commute.
