What to know before you compare

Travel insurance worth buying covers three distinct risks: trip cancellation/interruption (the headline benefit), emergency medical (especially abroad where U.S. health insurance often doesn't apply), and medical evacuation (the catastrophic-cost protection — air ambulance from abroad easily exceeds $100K).

Credit cards with built-in travel protection (Chase Sapphire Reserve, AmEx Platinum, some no-AF cards) cover some of these benefits already — verify the gap before buying a standalone policy. The U.S. Travel Insurance Association and NAIC have consumer guidance on travel insurance. The FTC advises on avoiding travel insurance scams at ftc.gov. Frequently asked questions

What does travel insurance cover?+

Comprehensive travel insurance generally covers trip cancellation and interruption, emergency medical care, emergency medical evacuation, lost or delayed baggage, and travel delays. Some plans add coverage for missed connections or rental-car damage. The strongest reasons to buy are usually emergency medical and evacuation abroad, where domestic health insurance often does not apply and air-ambulance costs can be enormous. Covered reasons and limits vary by policy, so review the certificate carefully.

Is travel insurance worth it?+

It depends on the trip's cost, your destination, and your existing coverage. Travel insurance tends to be most worthwhile for expensive, prepaid, nonrefundable trips, international travel where your health plan may not work, and trips where evacuation costs could be catastrophic. For inexpensive or fully refundable domestic trips, it may add little. Checking what your credit cards and health plan already cover helps you decide if a standalone policy fills a real gap.

When should you buy travel insurance?+

Buying soon after making your first trip deposit is often recommended, because certain benefits — such as pre-existing-condition waivers and Cancel For Any Reason coverage — typically require purchase within a short window of that initial payment, often around 14 to 21 days depending on the plan. Waiting can forfeit those time-sensitive benefits. Even standard cancellation coverage works best when bought early, since it can only protect against events that occur after purchase.

Does my health insurance cover me abroad?+

Often not, or only partially. Many U.S. health plans provide limited or no coverage outside the country, and Medicare generally does not cover care abroad. Even when some coverage exists, you may have to pay upfront and seek reimbursement. This gap is a primary reason travelers buy emergency medical and evacuation coverage for international trips. Confirm your plan's out-of-country rules with your insurer before relying on it overseas.

What is Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) coverage?+

Cancel For Any Reason is an optional upgrade that lets you cancel a trip for reasons not listed in a standard policy and recover a portion of nonrefundable costs — commonly around 50-75%. It usually must be purchased shortly after your initial trip deposit and requires canceling before a set number of days from departure. CFAR costs more than standard coverage but adds flexibility for travelers who want it. Terms vary by insurer.

Does travel insurance cover pre-existing medical conditions?+

Standard travel medical coverage may exclude pre-existing conditions, but many insurers offer a pre-existing-condition waiver if you buy the policy within a short window of your first trip payment and meet other criteria, such as insuring the full trip cost. With the waiver, a stable prior condition can be covered. Because the rules and look-back periods differ by insurer, read the policy terms or ask the provider directly before assuming coverage.
