Americans Hold $5.14 Trillion in Outstanding Consumer Credit
The Federal Reserve's G.19 Consumer Credit release (April 2026 data) shows total outstanding consumer credit reached $5.14 trillion in March 2026. Revolving credit — primarily credit cards — totaled $1.34 trillion and grew at a 9.1% annualized rate. Non-revolving credit (auto loans, student loans) stood at $3.80 trillion.
The Federal Reserve held the federal funds target rate at 3.50%–3.75% as of April 29, 2026. With the bank prime loan rate at 6.75%, variable-rate credit products tied to prime — including many business lines of credit — remain at historically elevated levels relative to the 2010s.
